BAROMETER
ReplyDeleteA barometer is a device that measures air (barometric) pressure. It measures the weight of the column of air that extends from the instrument to the top of the atmosphere. There are two types of barometers commonly used today, mercury and aneroid (meaning "fluidless"). Earlier water barometers (also known as "storm glasses") date from the 17th century. The mercury barometer was invented by the Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli (1608 - 1647), a pupil of Galileo, in 1643. Torricelli inverted a glass tube filled with mercury into another container of mercury; the mercury in the tube "weighs" the air in the atmosphere above the tube. The aneroid barometer (using a spring balance instead of a liquid) was invented by the French scientist Lucien Vidie in 1843.
This invention has allowed people to predict the whether for peoples knowledge and wellbeing. by predicting the air pressurre this piece of equipment has saved many lives

a) The invention of the microscope is attributed to Zacharias Janssen, who developed it in 1590.
ReplyDeleteb) Advances in technology enable new discoveries to be made which were previously unknown, due to the better access to information through the use of technology. When the microscope was made available for use by scientists a whole score of objects unseeable by the naked human eye, for example bacteria, were exposed to the world. This led to research into bacterial properties, which has been built upon by countless scientists throughout history. Without the microscope, this scientific knowledge would not have been discovered.

a) Name an example of a technology or invention developed by scientists. (1 mark)
ReplyDeletePenicilin discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928.
b) Explain how an advance in technology has increased scientific knowledge. (2 marks)
An advance in technology has increased scientific knowledge because with the technology, scientists are able to measure and observe more accurately and conveniantly.
A) Bifocals
ReplyDeleteThere is no certainty who invented the glasses. But we do know that they were made from quartz and were usually set in bone. Once it was discovered how to make glass without air bubbles it was used insead of quartz. Then in the 1780's, Benjamin Franklin was annoyed with having to canstantly change glasses for different things. He then had his reading glasses cut in half and fused with his distance glasses. These are now called bifocals.
B) Through the advances in science, we as human beings have beeen able to get a better understanding of many different thing and have been able to prove or deny theories. And with this we have made advances in both medicine and technology.
i agree with monique. the quotes of the week are pretty funny :D
ReplyDeletebut moving on to the actual questions.
a) Name an example of a technology or invention developed by scientists. (1 mark)
Scientist Hans Jassen and his son Zacharias are believed to have invented a microscope (20x magnification) somewhere between 1590 and 1610.
b) Explain how an advance in technology has increased scientific knowledge. (2 marks)
Advances in technology have increased scientific knowledge because access to better equipment lets us see where we were unable to see before. Microscopes allow us to see even the tiniest particle, vastly expanding our knowledge of cells, single-celled organisms and bacteria. Telescopes are another technology that increases our scientific knowledge, letting us see into outer space.
Also equipment helps us investigate things on a smaller scale. A light box helps us replicate the effects of light on prisms and ticker timers (the very best invention ever made – just ask Sir) show speed and acceleration, allowing us to investigate easier.

Good answers by most.
ReplyDeleteThe answer to question a) required only a one word answer to get full marks. Most of you have done this well.
The answer to question b) is a little more tricky. When you are answering questions like this you MUST pay close attention to what the question is asking for. In this case the question was asking for you to show how an advance in technology has increased our knowledge.
The people who answered with microscopes did a very good job of this question and would have got full marks. Have a read through their answers. They were able to link the advancement (microscope) to an increased knowledge. (better understanding of cells, etc...)
Good work. Answering exactly what the question asks for is the key to getting full marks.
