School Certificate Test Question #2

From The 2005 School Certificate Test. Due for Monday's Lesson.

***You can use your textbooks, notebooks, internet, etc... for your research, but your answer must be in your own words. Remember, these things won't be with you when you are writing the test.***

#2 (a) Name a type of electromagnetic radiation that is used in communication.

(b) Identify ONE advantage and ONE disadvantage of using this type of electromagnetic
radiation for communication.

29 comments:

  1. a)Mobile Phones transmit and receive Radiofrequency (Rf) radiation.

b)One advantage of using this type of radiation for communication is that scientists know this type of radiation for a long tome, therefore they can adjust the amounts so that, when people use mobiles, they are less exposed to it.

One disadvantage is that this type of radiation disrupts other electronic equiptment, such as medical equiptment. This can risk the lives of patients who rely on the equiptment for survival

  2. a. moblie phones the frequency Rf is used to transmit and recieve

    b. one advantage is that the transmittions are suitable to a satellite from earth

one disadvantage is that the waves are easily absorbed

mobile phones use the frequency RF (radiofrequency) to transmit and recieve.

    (b) Identify ONE advantage and ONE disadvantage of using this type of electromagnetic
    radiation for communication

one advantage of using this type of radiation is that it has a special property which allows it to easily ionise air and create a conductive path through the air.

one disadvantage of using this type of radiation is that it can cause various health problems, including cancer.

  4. mobile phones use radiofrequency to transmit and recieve.
ADV: this radiation allows us to reach people and convey information without wires.
DISADV: high doses can have health risks, but chances are pretty low that it will give cancer. i'd risk using a phone. lol.

  5. mobile phone uses radiofrequency to transmit and receive

adv: the waves can pass through air and transmit into another persons call so we can call who ever we want, even in countries like russia

dis adv: radiation of the wave can cause cancer but i have never heard of anyone getting cancer from a phone so i wouldnt worry...

  6. a) Name a type of electromagnetic radiation that is used in communication.

    Infrared radiation.

    b) Identify ONE advantage and ONE disadvantage of using this type of electromagnetic radiation for communication.

    Advantage~ low power requirements.
Disadvantage~ weather and sunlight may affect transmissions.

  8. a) Microwaves are used for transmitting telephone calls an computer data from one area to another.

    b) An advantage is that it can send information over long distances.

A disadvantage is that it can be blocked by thick obstructions such as mountains. To get around this disadvantage, several microwave towers and satellites are set up so microwaves can be bounced around objects.

  9. I'm assuming that part a) is worth one mark and part b) is worth two marks...

    a) Microwaves are used in communication.

    b) An advantage to using microwaves is that they can be customised to carry many strands of data at once, making them useful for transmitting large amounts of information. A disadvantage to using microwaves is that they are easily absorbed by materials on the Earth, and so transmission may be disrupted.

  11. radio

advantage safe, has a non ionising effect

disadvantage can be disrupted by solar activities

i hope this is right :( i hope this works it didnt before

    (b) Identify ONE advantage and ONE disadvantage of using this type of electromagnetic
    radiation for communication.

advantage:easily ionise air and create a conductive path through the air.

disadvantage:hazardous to your health and cause problems such as cancer

  13. phones use radiofrequency (RF) signals to transmit and receive voice and data
an advantage of this is the waves are safe and you can contact people easily across continents
a disadvantage of this is that the signals can disrupt hospital equipment.

  14. a) mobile fones :)

    b) adv. its an easier way to communicate with others
disadv. the radiation is bad for us humans and can cause problems with our brains if we spend to much near it.. especially when we sleep next to them

    XD

  15. A) Radio waves are used to carry information

    B) ADVANTAGE: can reach many people at once because there many stations.
    DISADVANTAGE: has distance barriers

  16. a) walkie talkies transmit and recieve (weak) radiofrequency radiation

    b) advantage - doesnt cost anything to use the device except for batteries

disadvantage - cannot be used for long distances

  17. A) television uses radiowaves to transmit broadcasts.

    B)
advatnage: easy to use and doesn't harm the environment.
    disadvantage: can be disrupted easily.

and just a random fact about television that i picked up on my travels...Americans spend around 5-6 hours of their time watching television!! :O

haha...and that's your funny fact of the day!

  18. radio
advantage: emit less radiation than television or many other forms of communication
disadvantage: cannot reach a very large audience, as is cannot be used over a long distance

  19. a) radio waves

    b) advantage: they can carry messages instantaneously over far distances.
disadvantage: limited frequencies can be accessed creating competition amongst companies making it costly to use a frequency.

  21. A) A walkie talkie
B)Advantage-Can transmit messages wirelessly, without a satellite.
Disadvantage- If your conversation can be overheard by people if they tuned into the same channel as you.

  22. mobile phone (thought id be different :P)

    the good side :D
easy way to communicate with family and friends with no attachments (wires), can use it where ever and wherever you want to anywhere in the world..

    The Bad side >:D
-40% higher risk of certain types of brain tumors.
-bad for your health with easy absorbent radiation
    -higher risk of developing cancer

    my hw is done :)

  23. Infrared radiation.

Advantage- An advantage of using radiation for communication is its effectiveness and quick speed to transmit form one device to another. It is also very flexible and easy to use.
Disadvantage- A disadvantage is the radiation it uses which may be harmful to the user and the people around him. This may cause harmful medical conditions.

  24. mobile phones can be used for communication through electromagnetic radiation.

the plus side to these phones is that they are handy they arent too expensive to make or run, and they work over a large proximity.

the bad side of mobile phones is that it is thought to be linked to some kinds of cancer because you are effected by some forms of radiation and it is said it can affect the worst at ayoung ange

  25. mobile phones use radiofrequency radiation.
-adv. it is very efficient in making contact with others.
-disadv. too much of this radiation can cause harm to the human body.

  26. (a) A type of electromagnetic radiation that is used in communication is Microwaves which can send very short wave length radio waves.

    (b) Adv - The radio waves from the Microwave passes through the ionosphere (The uppermost part of the atmosphere, which creates the inner edge of the magnetosphere), so it is suitable for satellite to Earth transmissions, carrying many signals at one time such as data, pictures and voice messages.

Dis - A disadvantage to this is that the waves are easily absorbed by materials and natural objects (rain, concrete) which may stop the transmission. They are also absorbed by living tissue and may cause harm to the human body.

    finished =)
